To provide some further inspiration, here’s my brief story in finding my power to achieve a dream of becoming a winning racing driver, despite my age, weight and pain being stacked against me…

I don’t really know what compelled me the day that I saw a competition on TV to become a female racing driver! I felt the urge to enter the competition on the off-chance.
10,000 women applied; 1,000 were lucky enough to make it through to a selection process. At that point in time I started meeting my fellow competitors and realised that it was more than just a bit of fun and that I had a real desire to win.
But I just didn’t know how to achieve what I wanted and unlock my potential.
What you need to know is that I was in my mid-thirties, overweight and at this point in time I was struggling to even walk!
I had been in a bad bike accident 2 years before and was having physiotherapy every week on my hip, leg and back. Occasionally I even had to use a walking stick to help me get around. I certainly couldn’t run well enough to pass the fitness test that I knew I was going to have to go through.
“Fate” played a hand – one night I couldn’t sleep because I was in pain and was flicking through TV channels. I came across an “infomercial” from Tony Robbins, who is a leading self-improvement guru. I was inspired by the TV advert and bought the box set CDs – these were expensive and required a lot of self-discipline to get the benefits.
Knowing these important techniques has changed my entire outlook on life.
I started to focus on what I wanted and spent a lot of time working out how to get there. I had no support and no one to talk it through with. I just had those CDs (which I loaded onto my MP3 player) as well as listening to them in the car). I also spent quite a lot of money on books (some good & some not so good!), which I hoped would give me the edge I needed.
I filled out my own journal, set my own goals and started searching out what I really wanted. My focus was on becoming a winning racing driver and I changed to achieve that goal. My ability to overcome the pain I was in and to start power-breathing and power-walking was fuelled by me seeing myself on that podium, holding the winner’s cup. I bought books on understanding race cars and the mental approach to winning,
racing and going around corners properly!
All I can tell you is that it worked! I found the energy to succeed and to be proud of myself, my self-esteem become stronger and I started attracting good things – I became a mechanic for a couple of race teams (unpaid) at weekends and learnt all there was to know about the racing world. This meant that I knew what to expect when it came to my opportunity to race.
The 1,000 women were then invited to a set of selection days. Where we have to not only drive a race car, but compete in go-karts, stand in front of the judges and explain why we wanted to be a racing driver, complete a test and finally…
Run in the dreaded bleep-test, which is an exercise in running against a clock and timed “bleep”, the aim of which is to reach a certain level, to show your fitness. I knew what I wanted – what my goal was in front of me. I concentrated on it and ran until I passed the required level and then I hobbled away to nurse my aching hip, leg and back!
The results took 2 weeks to come through. From the 1,000 women in the selection process, I was one of the 64 who made it through to the next round!
These 64 then lined up to take part in a World Record Breaking race meeting – the most women taking part in a car racing event.
I was in the first race of 16 women. Although things were fine in practice, qualifying went badly for me on the Saturday and I was a disappointing 6th on the grid.
The race started on a wet, cold Sunday morning. However, I had been looked deep into myself on the Saturday night and knew that I was still able to achieve. I looked for that self-belief and power inside me.
You can read the full race report in a PDF on another page of this website, to get the independent view of the race reporter on the day – but I summarise it here for you…
I lined up on the grid with the aim of beating the 5 in front and not letting the 10 behind get past! This was my first ever race. I was psyched up and ready to get going. The first corned was tricky, with a spin in front of me, which I had to negotiate. However, by the second corner, I was in third place, having driven clean around another competitor! I then set to hunting down the 2nd and 1st placed drivers. Before long I was up behind the others and overtook one on one lap and another on the next. I was in the lead and I kept the catching 2nd place driver behind me to win! The race was over so quickly but I had found my inner strength to achieve the goal I was striving for!
I believe that we can all find the power to do the same
The great news is that you don’t have to buy expensive tapes and rely upon self-coaching to find the strength.
